Tooth Replacement
There are several methods and options for those needing tooth replacement. Let us explain the benefits and features of bridges, implants, dentures or partial dentures; and find the bet solution for you.
Procedure steps include:
- Missing tooth root is replaced with an implant, which remains covered under the gum line.
- A healing period of up to six months allows the implant to take.
- The implant is uncovered and an extension attached.
- Replacement tooth is affixed to the implant and extension.
Implants
If you’re missing one or multiple teeth, dental implants offer a highly effective way to restore both function and appearance, giving you the closest experience to having natural teeth again. Implants are crafted from titanium and fuse directly into your jawbone, functioning like the root of your original tooth. Once the implant is set, a post (also known as an abutment) can be secured, allowing a crown to be attached on top. Implants look, feel, and function like natural teeth, and they can be brushed and flossed as part of your regular oral care.
Implants also present a reliable solution for loose dentures. Instead of a crown, a connector can be added to the implant, allowing your denture to snap into place securely.
At Lake Pointe, we partner with experienced specialists who have placed hundreds of implants. You’ll begin with a consultation to assess your candidacy for an implant, as successful placement requires good health and the ability to undergo anesthesia.
After the post is inserted, you’ll return to Dr. Qazi for the final restoration, whether it’s a permanent crown or an implant-supported denture. During the healing phase, a temporary bridge or crown may be recommended to maintain your comfort and functionality.
Bridges
For those missing a few teeth, a dental bridge provides a dependable solution. Bridges fill the gaps left by missing teeth by anchoring to the adjacent teeth, creating a seamless, natural-looking restoration. Typically, completing a bridge requires multiple visits.
During your first appointment, the teeth on either side of the missing space are prepared for porcelain crowns. The replacement teeth, crafted from tooth-shaped porcelain, are then secured between these crowns to form the bridge. Once in place, the bridge looks and functions like your natural teeth. While flossing under a bridge can be more challenging than with an implant, bridges offer an excellent option—particularly for patients with gum or bone conditions where implants might not be ideal.
Bridges are a permanent, non-removable restoration, designed to give you a comfortable and lasting solution for missing teeth.
Partials
When implants and bridges aren’t viable options, a removable partial denture can provide an effective alternative. Partial dentures consist of replacement teeth attached to a plastic base with clasps that secure the denture to surrounding teeth. Various types of partials are available, from those with metal clasps to options with clasps that match the color of your teeth or gums for a more natural appearance.
Getting accustomed to partial dentures may take some time. They might feel a bit tight initially, often requiring adjustments from your dentist. Follow-up visits are helpful to ensure comfort and prevent any pressure points or sore spots.
While partials are generally less expensive and less invasive than implants or bridges, they do require more careful handling. It’s essential to remove them at night, as the teeth on partial dentures are not as durable as natural teeth or porcelain crowns and could be damaged if you grind your teeth.
Dentures
For those requiring a complete set of replacement teeth, full dentures offer an affordable solution, resting comfortably atop the gums. Although they may take some getting used to, we take special care to ensure our dentures are never painful. Multiple appointments will be scheduled to perfect the fit and appearance of your new dentures, ensuring you’re pleased with both the look and feel.
Over time, adjustments to your dentures may be necessary. As we age, natural changes in the mouth, such as bone resorption and gum recession, can affect denture fit, causing potential discomfort. It’s important to mention any sore spots so adjustments can be made for optimal comfort. Like partial dentures, full dentures should be removed at night.
If you already wear dentures and are interested in a more permanent option, implant-supported dentures may be an excellent choice, providing additional stability and function.
